The newly created Model-driven Machine Learning group (m-dml.org) combines ML- and physics-based approaches to Earth system modelling. We use deep learning to build faster and more accurate components for climate and weather models, generate forecasts and quantify uncertainties. We make use of algorithms and architectures from the cutting edge of ML research, while adapting them to the challenges of large-scale computation and data in Earth science.
This position is designed for a curious and driven Postdoc to focus on challenging and impactful research, supported by extensive on-site expertise and top-notch computational resources, with minimal administrative or teaching duties. The ideal candidate would be an ML expert first and foremost, with knowledge of numerical integration and geoscientific modelling welcome but not essential. However, geoscientists with experience and a publication record in ML are also encouraged to apply. The position is initially limited to three years.
Equality of opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the position.
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon conducts cutting-edge international research for a changing world: Around 1,100 employees contribute to the tackling of climate change, the sustainable use of the world's coastal systems and the resource-compatible enhancement of the quality of life. From fundamental research to practical applications, the interdisciplinary research spectrum covers a unique range.
The Institute for Coastal Systems Analysis and Modeling studies the dynamics of coastal systems as part of the Earth system and develops prediction methods and future scenarios for coastal systems. One focus of our research is the study of coastal ecosystems, which are subject to increasing pressure to change due to climate change, use of coastal environments, and other human drivers.
Then we are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive application documents indicating the reference number 2021/KS 10. Applications should include a CV statement of interest and three references.
Apply nowSeverely disabled persons and those equaling severely disabled persons who are equally suitable for the position will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
